We want to hear from you!

We’ve drafted a Long Term Plan for the Timaru District that lays out some of the big challenges we’re facing, and our ideas on how to solve them.  Young people have an important role to play in our District – the future is your future!

Are you aged 12 – 25? Do you have ideas on how to make the Timaru District the best place to live in New Zealand?

By sharing your views, you have the opportunity to learn something new, gain valuable research skills, AND win some AWESOME prizes!!

The Competition

Council wants to know your thoughts on our Key Issues, and how you think we can solve these issues.

This competition is open to 12-25 year olds who live in the Timaru District. Entries are open from 10th April 2021 and must be received by 5pm on 10th May 2021.

We know there are a lot of creative and talented young people in our District – so we invite you to submit your answers in any creative form – it could be an essay, a video, a song or even a piece of artwork!

How to enter:

  2. Choose the issue that you think is the most important
  3. Answer these two questions:
    "Why do you think this issue is the most important"

    "How should Timaru District Council help solve this issue?"

The Prizes

All entrants will receive a certificate acknowledging their entry, and your entry will be considered by Council when finalising the Long Term Plan for the Timaru District. This is something you can put on your CV or resume – you’ve helped shape the future of our District!

First, second and third place winners will also be selected by a judging team at Council – with some AMAZING prizes up for grabs!

  • Do some extra research on your chosen issue – this will help grow your research skills and show us that you know your stuff!
  • Express yourself! It’s your ideas that we want to hear, and your time to shine – be honest with your answers and reference any information sources you use.

Terms and Conditions

By entering this Competition, entrants or their parents/caregivers are deemed to have read, understood and accepted the following general Terms and Conditions.

General
  1. Thriving Together Competition prizes are given to the top three winning entries selected by a judging panel at Timaru District Council (unless otherwise stated).
  2. Entries received after the specified closing date will not be accepted.
  3. Every entrant warrants that their entry is their own work. Timaru District Council reserves the right to disqualify any entrant who does not comply with these terms and conditions.
  4. The Thriving Together Competition is open to residents of the Timaru District, aged 12 to 25.

Entries, Selection & Prizes

  1. All reasonable attempts will be made to contact Competition winners using details provided on their entry forms. Should those attempts fail, another winner will be selected.
  2. Prizes are not redeemable for cash, nor transferable to any other person.
  3. If a prize or part of a prize becomes unavailable (for any reason), Timaru District Council reserves the right to limit entry, cancel or amend the prizes at its own and sole discretion, including providing the winners with a substitute prize, either in full or in part.
  4. Prizes must be collected in person from Timaru District Council offices, 2 King George Place, Timaru. If preferred by the winner, prizes can be sent by courier. Couriers are instructed to have all prizes signed for on receipt. Failure to obtain a signature will result in the prize being returned to Timaru District Council and another winner may be drawn/selected.
  5. Timaru District Council’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  6. By entering the competition, you allow Timaru District Council to consider your entry as a submission to the Timaru District Council’s Long Term Plan 2021-31 public consultation process. Your entry will be recorded on the Timaru District Council website and you will be invited to share your entry via a presentation at a public hearing on Timaru District Council Long Term Plan 2021-31. Timaru District Council staff will notify prize winners of the time, date and location of their presentation. Prize winners will be entitled to bring up to five companions, parents or caregivers to attend their presentation.
Privacy
  1. All entrants consent to participate and co-operate as required in all promotional activities relating to the Competition. We collect your name, age and contact details in order to administer this competition, including to identify and notify winners.
  2. Entry forms will not be returned. All information provided by the entrants will be collected, used, stored, disclosed and corrected in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020. Where participants are under the age of 16, parents/caregivers must sign the entry form.
  3. Personal information provided will only be used for purposes associated with the Thriving Together competition.
  4. By entering, you or your parent/guardian consent to your entry being displayed at Council offices or made publicly available as part of the TDC Long Term Plan 2021-31 consultation. Providing your information is optional. If you choose not to enter your name and contact details, we'll be unable to accept your entry.
  5. All entrants have the right to access their information and request for any personal information to be corrected.
Exclusions
  1. The following persons are not eligible to win any prize:
    1. Anyone under the age of 12 or over the age of 25 at the time of entering the Competition
    2. Anyone not resident in the Timaru District at the time of the prize draw.
    3. Anyone who works for Timaru District Council or any Council-controlled organisations, or any agencies or companies associated with the Competition.
  2. Timaru District Council reserves the right to exclude any entrant from participating at its sole discretion. Timaru District Council also reserves the right to refuse to award a prize to an entrant who is in breach of these Terms and Conditions, gained an unfair advantage in participating or won by using fraudulent means.
  3. Timaru District Council will not be liable for any loss, damage, costs (for instance incurred in accepting or redeeming a prize) or any injury whatsoever suffered by an entrant as a result of or in connection with the Competition, including any inability to enter, complete or continue the competition or giveaway due to equipment or technical malfunction.
  4. Timaru District Council reserves the right to amend or change these Terms and Conditions at any time at its sole discretion, including extending, postponing or cancelling the Competition.
  5. These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of New Zealand and shall be subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the New Zealand Courts.
  6. Thriving Together Competition Prizes
  7. 1x $1000 cash prize (First Place Prize) 
    1. The prize is a $1000 cash prize, to be deposited into a bank account nominated by the prize winner.
    2. The prize winner must provide a valid bank account for depositing of cash prize within 20 working days of notification of their winning a prize.
    3. The prize is non-transferable to other people.
  8. 1x $250 cash prize (Second Place Prize) 
    1. The prize is a $1000 cash prize, to be deposited into a bank account nominated by the prize winner.
    2. The prize winner must provide a valid bank account for depositing of cash prize within 20 working days of notification of their winning a prize.
    3. The prize is non-transferable to other people.
  9. 1x $100 cash prize (Third Place Prize)
    1. The prize is a $100 cash prize, to be deposited into a bank account nominated by the prize winner.
    2. The prize winner must provide a valid bank account for depositing of cash prize within 20 working days of notification of their winning a prize.
    3. The prize is non-transferable to other people.
  10. Morning tea with the Mayor of Timaru District, Nigel Bowen (First, Second and Third Place Prize)
    1. The prize is a fully catered morning tea at Timaru District Council Offices, 2 King George Place, Timaru with Mayor of the Timaru District, Nigel Bowen.
    2. The date and time of the morning tea will be agreed mutually between the prize winner and Timaru District Council staff.
    3. The prize winner will be entitled to invite up to two companions, parents or caregivers to attend the morning tea.
    4. The prize is non-transferable to other people.
